PERTH CLAIMS CHARITY SHIELD

Reigning State League champions Perth SC have claimed the second title up for grabs in 2011, after a 1-0 victory against Stirling Lions in the Football West Charity Shield.

An early second-half strike from Perth defender Shaun Kilkelly was the difference between the two teams, despite the Lions having several chances to find the back of the net.

Big game specialist Ludo Boi was named the Alan Beale medallist after an outstanding performance in a losing side.

Boi also claimed man-of-the-match honours in last season’s Cup Final against Floreat Athena.

Stirling began the match strongly after a great ball across the box from Ross Anderson, but Phil O’Callaghan’s shot lacked conviction and was right at Devon Spence.

A fantastic Robbie Puca free kick towards the six-yard box moments later nearly saw the opener at the other end, but the advancing Kilkelly couldn’t get to the ball in time.

A Stirling Lions attack then saw the ball find O’Callaghan, whose turn and shot was yet again directed right at Spence.

David Onoforo had a golden chance to grab the opener on the half hour mark, but after rounding Stirling goalkeeper James Turvill, his shot couldn’t beat a backtracking Lions captain Jason Gavin who stopped his effort on the goal line.

The second half saw an early goal to Perth scored by Kilkelly after his shot had too much power and found a way past Turvill.

Vlad Naumovski hit the right post for Perth a few minutes later and it could have made it 2-0.

Gavin tried to lift his side with a telling ball into the box, but Jamie Watt headed his effort inches wide of the target.

David Perich went down in the box after an attacking run for the Lions, but referee Hugh Best waived away Stirling’s appeals for a penalty.

O’Callaghan was then booked for a late dive, despite appearing like he had a genuine shout for a penalty claim with just five minutes left on the clock.

The match ended on a sour note for Perth after Adam Bachiller was sent off for a second yellow just before the final whistle.

All gate proceeds will be donated to Telethon for the second successive year.
