Cockburn City - Fremantle Spirit 2:1 (1:1)

Goals: 1:0 Aaron Dos Santos (9.); 1:1 Jason Barerra (17.); 2:1 Giovanni Di Bartolo (77.)

Cockburn City has continued their impressive winning streak with a 2-1 victory over local rivals Fremantle at Dalmatinac Park today.

The winning goal came 15 minutes from full time from second half substitute Giovanni Di Bartolo, in what was a physical yet entertaining match.

Cockburn were all over their opponents early in the contest and only two minutes were on the board when Dean Wallace had a goal disallowed for offside and the Fremantle crossbar was hit just seconds later.

Cockburn’s early dominance was rewarded after seven minutes though, when Aaron Dos Santos, running courageously with the flight of the ball was able to get the slightest touch over Stephen Grant to make it 1-0. Fremantle started to come into the game as the first half wore on, with the young side not taking a step back in what was a physical opening. Their patience was rewarded on 18 minutes; a good string of passes opened a gap for Jason Barrera, who finished coolly past Dino Pacella.

Barrera was by far the most dangerous of the Fremantle players going forward, while Wallace and Dos Santos were threatening along with Josh Kamasz for Cockburn.

The game started to get out of control just before the half, with three yellow cards handed out in quick succession, and others lucky not to suffer the same fate.

After the break, Cockburn came out stronger, with Wallace and Dom De Felice coming close to restoring the home sides lead. At the other end, Vas Kalageracos came close, in what was a relatively quiet day for the former Glory star.

After a brief bit of Fremantle dominance, Cockburn were again on the offensive as Cockburn Coach Scott Miller brought on Di Bartolo to almost immediate effect, with a penalty claim turned down within a few minutes of his arrival.

The winner came 15 minutes from the end, with Kamasz’s quick thinking from a throw finding Paul Natale inside the Fremantle box, whose cross found Di Bartolo who nodded home from close range.

The win keeps Cockburn second behind Floreat Athena, who they play in a mouth watering cup clash next week, while Fremantle stay 8th, well off the pace of finals football.

Inglewood United - Perth SC 0:6 (0:4)

Goals: 0:1 Barry Wood (13.); 0:2 Andreas Oliveira (18.); 0:3 Antonio Naglieri (34.); 0:4 Andreas Oliveira (42.); 0:5 Andreas Oliveira (68.); 0:6 Barry Wood (78.)

Perth S.C has signalled a devastating warning to ladder leaders Floreat Athena that the premiership race is far from over, after a thumping 6-0 win over Inglewood United at Clipsal Stadium.

A hat-trick from diminutive striker Andreas Oliviera and a double to Barry Wood sealed Inglewood’s fate, while midfielder Antonio Naglieri also found the scoresheet in a dominant team performance from the visitors.

Their victory was soured however with the sending off of the hat-trick hero Oliviera only five minutes from full time.

Following a recent run of impressive wins, Inglewood United were looking to take another scalp and had two quality chances in the opening five minutes with Dean Apelgren and Jason Colli denied by the goalkeeper and the woodwork respectively.

It didn’t take long for Perth to find their rhythm and they opened the scoring on 14 minutes when some hesistant United defence saw Barry Wood dink his shot over a hapless Oliver Taseski from the edge of the box. Five minutes later, Perth doubled their lead when creative midfielder Antonio Naglieri delivered a centimetre perfect ball to Oliviera, who lobbed the advancing Taseski to grab his first of three goals.

The visitors were finding plenty of gaps in the Inglewood defence and on 35 minutes, a wonderful team display gave Perth their third. Peter Lord and Barry Wood played the neat one-two before feeding a vacant Naglieri, who tapped into the empty net. Inglewood’s Mladen Kovacevic worked hard in attack for the home side however he couldn’t drag a goal back before the break.

Instead it was Perth who added a fourth minutes before the interval when Taseski spilt a long range shot from Naglieri into the path of Oliviera, who reacted quickly to register his second.

The home side looked slightly stronger after the half time team talks and substitute Matt Wardle was impressing after a recent trial with Perth Glory in Malaysia.

Nothing could stop the Perth onslaught though and Oliviera had his hat-trick after Michael Ord unselfishly laid off to the pocket dynamo to slot in his third.

Barry Wood put the icing on the cake with 12 minutes remaining with a well taken strike before the goal-scoring hero Oliviera was given his marching orders after a rather dubious second booking.

Coach Graham Normanton will take plenty of confidence into next weekend’s Soccer Pools Cup quarter final against Stirling Lions, while Bobby Despotovski will need to rejuvenate his troops quickly for their meeting with first division heavyweights Mandurah City.

Sorrento - Wanneroo City 4:0 (2:0)

Goals: 1:0 Steve McDonald (8.); 2:0 Daniel Cagorski (44.); 3:0 Steve McDonald (70.); 4:0 Todd Harnwell (90.)

Sorrento showed no mercy in condemning Wanneroo City to a 4-0 loss at Percy Doyle Reserve. The loss leaves Wanneroo a massive nine points adrift of eleventh place and in need of a miracle of Biblican proportions to escape relegation. The rain had cleared but not the wind when Sorrento leapt into attack through the three-prodded attack of Chris Boyle, Jared Love and Todd Harnwell. Boyle had the ball in the net after 3 minutes but his effort was ruled out for a foul on Jordan Conti who, four minutes later, moved sharply to his left to save a penalty taken by Love. The pressure value was released shortly after when Scott Neville directed a free-kick into the 18-yard box where Steve McDonald's downward header bounced inside the far post to put Sorrento ahead. Wanneroo's first opening arrived on 10 minutes as Craig Cheeseman's effort curled past the post. The game opened up as play streamed from end to end and Love was again thwarted Conti, while Anthony Cochrane tipped a Carl Harrison shot over the crossbar. With half-time looming, James Morgan played a corner to the far post where substitute Daniel Cagorski fired in to double the margin. A disjointed start to the second period was brought to life on 63 minutes by a Cheeseman overhead that flashed slightly over the bar. Play swung to the opposite end where Love centred to Harnwell whose shot was battered wide by Conti. McDonald added a third to the hosts' tally when allowed time to control, turn and shoot into the net from a neville cross. An acrobatic clearance by Daniel Hendley prevented Harwnell from opening his account after latching on to a long clearance from Cochrane. The scoring was completed five minutes from the end by Harnwell who rifled into the bottom corner after racing on to Stuart Banks' chipped pass over the defence.

Sorrento (4-3-3): Cochrane, Neville, S McDonald, Yorke, Banks, Morgan, Martin, Flatt (Thomas 71), Harnwell, Love, Boyle (Cagorski 37). Subs not used: Ross, Taylor, Gurovski. Cautioned: Morgan.

Wanneroo (4-3-1-1): Conti, Pugh, Hendley, Yates, Donnelly, Andrews, Vukmirovic (Woodward 46), Cheeseman, Ward, Harrison (Bowman 77), Yates (Houston 77). Subs not used: Mackie, J McDonald. Cautioned: Harrison.

Swan I.C. - Armadale 3:1 (2:0)

Goals: 1:0 Damien Scali (27.); 2:0 David Foster (Penalty, 35.); 3:0 David Foster (48.); 3:1 Scott Paterson (76.)

Swan I.C. won for just the third time this season by out-shooting Armadale 3-1 at the Swan Italian Club. The win was tainted, however, by the controversial first half dismissal of Armadale goalkeeper Cyril Sharrock. The opening exchanges produced some good chances on goal for both camps. The home side threatened first through Aaron Cole whose header from a David Perich free-kick was held by Sharrock. Neil Galwey chanced his luck from distance only to have Cory Hugo saved down low, and Rory Mouttet thwarted Darren Kingston as the big forward lined-up a Gawley centre. Swan got the breakthrough on 23 minutes when the impressive Perich curled in a free-kick which Damian Scali flicked past a stranded Sharrock. Referee Hugh Best stepped in following an altercation between Scali and Sharrock who, having already been booked, was harshly red carded. Armadale reshuffled their deck with Ben Howe making way for young ‘keeper Matthew Johnson to make his State League debut. The home side were determined to make the most of the extra player and Brendan Knox’ long-range effort was kept out by Johnson. The young ‘keeper came to his sides rescue again in the 36th minute by parrying a vicious strike from Foster, but unfortunately Gawley brought down Perich as they contested the follow-up leaving the referee with no option but to award a penalty. Foster stepped up and scored low to Johnson’s right to take the difference to two goals at the break. The game was all but over four minutes after the re-start as Foster tucked in at close-range after Johnson parried a low cross from Anthony McStea. Armadale got their consolation goal with thirteen minutes to go when Scott Paterson curled a superb free-kick into the top corner following a handball decision against Perich. This lifted the visitors with Scott Devine and Rob Crerar going close to further reducing the deficit before the final whistle.

Western Knights - ECU Joondalup 1:1 (0:0)

Goals: 0:1 Craig Young (76.); 1:1 Anthony Skorich (78.)

The points were shared at Nash Field where Western Knights and E.C.U. Joondalup finished level at 1-1. Joondalup dominated a frenetic opening quarter hour and would have been several goals the better if not for Knights custodian Kevin Miller who was at his brilliant best in denying Tom Amphlett, Marc Anthony and Craig Young. Having weathered the early storm, the Knights slowly worked their way back into the game through the efforts of Stuart Montgomery and Daniel Trim. A fierce first time strike by John Thornley clattered into the upright, and a terrific shot by Anthony Skorich was expertly saved by Alex Vrteski. The end to end nature of the game produced opening for both sides and in the minutes before the break Ian McMurray and Anthony went close to putting Joondalup ahead, while for the home side it was Andrjia Jukic and Montgomery who threatened to break through. The second half continued in much same fashion as further chances went begging. Joondalup stepped up a gear with the introduction of Jon Higgins whose first involvement was to unleash a 25-metre rocket which Miller tipped away from the top corner. The deadlock was broken on 75 minutes when Higgins lured two opponents before back heeling for Craig Young to fire into the bottom corner from just inside the 18-yard box. With two minutes the hosts had hit back as Montgomery played in Thornley whose shot on the turn was parried by Vrteski into the path of Skorich who slotted in the equaliser. The Knights controlled the closing stages with Montgomery having a shot cleared off the line, and Vrteski moved sharply to thwart Jukic in a one-on-one situation.

Floreat Athena - Stirling Lions 4:0 (1:0)

Goals: 1:0 Boima Karpeh (2.); 2:0 Boima Karpeh (67.); 3:0 Boima Karpeh (83.); 4:0 Paul Vatistas (90+2.)

Floreat Athena goal machine Jerry Karpeh smashed in another hat trick as his side put Stirling Lions to the sword, with a 4-0 win at E & D Litis Stadium on Saturday evening. It took Karpeh only two minutes to put his side ahead after using his blistering pace to embarrass Lions defender Kevin Henderson, and slot home from inside the area. The same man then served up an opportunity for Adam Bachiller only moments later with an unselfish flick on header but the winger’s volley flew over the bar.

At the other end, Phil Arnold used his pace well to recover a lost ball before it headed over the by-line, but his low centre evaded the oncoming support as the danger passed for Floreat.

On 30 minutes, a Stirling corner fell to Arnold whose stabbed shot was cleared away by goalkeeper Vas Vujacic but only as far as Ludovic Boi, whose side footed first time effort went just wide of the upright.

Six minutes later and Vujacic was called into action again after he produced a diving save to deny a Brown header from a deep free kick. Karpeh was denied his second on 40 minutes after being flagged for offside following some good build up play.

Karpeh was causing all sorts of problems for the Lions defence and a solo run from half way following a cleared Lions corner saw Straker palm away a low effort on the angle.

But on 68 minutes, Karpeh ensured the points would stay with the home side after he ran onto a long Vujacic clearance and aided by a slip from a Lions defender, smashed a volley over Straker and into the roof of the net to spark jubilation amongst the Athena supporters in the crowd.

The hat trick should have come on 82 minutes after a counter attack found the striker free in the box but he lifted his effort just wide of the bar.

Karpeh however was not to be denied again and duly slotted home his third of the night after being the beneficiary of a superb turn and pass on halfway from Jonathon Davite.

Tensions were mounting on the sidelines and the referee was called on to calm the two sides down for the final few minutes before Floreat rubbed further salt into the Lions wounds after Paul Vatistas converted a low centre from Stefan Smiljanic in injury time.
