Balcatta - Morley-Windmills 2:3 (2:1)

Goals: 0:1 Scott McIlroy; 1:1 Anthony Toutounizs (39.); 2:1 John Nicolaou (45.); 2:2 Seita Hamamoto (63.); 2:3 Scott McIlroy (Penalty, 82.)

Morley Windmills bounced back into form this afternoon with a 3-2 away victory against Balcatta at Graham Burkett Reserve.

Morley took an early lead through Scott McIlroy when his powerful free-kick from 25 yards sailed into the net past a motionless ‘keeper, with the Balcatta defenders left confused after the linesman had raised his flag, only for the referee to overrule the decision. John Nicolaou was just inches away from levelling the score in the 18th minute when a free-kick taken by Tony Cumace found him on ten yards. The striker made good contact with ball but could only head it onto the crossbar.

Seita Hamamoto had a good chance to put Morley further in front in the 30th minute after Remo McCann cut back to the unmarked forward but his shot on the volley from eight yards went horribly over.

Anthony Tountounzis leveled the score at 1-1 in the 39th minute when he shot from a difficult angle but did enough to beat Windmills goalkeeper Chris Ramsey.

The home side took the lead on the stroke of half-time through Nicolaou, when he was first to meet a cross from the left wing and poked home.

Nine minutes after half-time, Nicolaou came close to putting Balcatta further in front following Cumace’s long range free-kick. Nicolaou met the ball on eight yards but headed just over, much to the relief of Ramsey.

Hamamoto made Balcatta pay for that missed opportunity as he tied the score in the 63rd minute. After being played in-behind he was forced into a tough position but still managed to beat the Balcatta ‘keeper from 10 yards.

Five minutes later Paul Dundo almost put Morley in front with a shot from 25 yards, but Balcatta were saved by the woodwork as the ball bounced off the crossbar. The visitors earned a penalty eight minutes from full-time when an attacker was brought down by the goalkeeper inside the box. Striker Scott McIlroy stepped up to take the spot-kick and took it brilliantly, scoring in the top right corner, leaving the Balcatta ‘keeper with no chance to secure a 3-2 victory for Morley.

Bayswater City - Dianella White Eagles 3:2 (3:1)

Goals: 0:1 Jon Greenwood (3.); 1:1 Ryan Frisina (14.); 2:1 Sal Marrapodi; 3:1 Ryan Frisina (30.); 3:2 Dean Gartside (75.)

Bayswater City recovered from conceding an early goal to defeat Dianella White Eagles 3-2 at Frank Drago Reserve. The day started positively enough for the visitors who went ahead on 3 minutes when Michael Maine crossed to the far post where an unmarked Jon Greenwood volleyed in. Bayswater worked their way back into the game and parity was restored eleven minutes later when Ryan Frisina found the net after some poor defending. The goal served to boost the confidence of the home team who soon had the lead after an error by goalkeeper Todd Busby gifted Sal Marrapodi his sixth goal of the season. Bayswater were determined to make the most of the momentum and on the half hour Frisina took full advantage of another defensive mistake to neatly lob Busby from 9-metres. Dianella began the second half at full pace and good chances came the way of Greenwood, Maine, Dragan Njegic, Paul Hickey and Ray Rose who were all unable to capitalise. They finally pegged back a goal with fifteen minutes remaining when Njegic slipped the ball through to Dean Gartside who coolly slotted the ball past the ‘keeper. Dianella threw everything snatching a late point only to be held out by a resilient home defence.

Mandurah City - Ashfield 0:2 (0:1)

Goals: 0:1 Martin Kelly (44.); 0:2 Rydeen Botha (80.)

Ashfield came to Mandurah today needing a win to keep their season alive and, it must be said, but for some very average finishing from Mandurah, that task could have been made even more difficult within minutes of the kickoff.

Jordan Rhodes created the first chance with a ball across the face of the goal which fell to Christian Paschkewitz who skied the ball well over the Ashfield crossbar from less than 10 yards out.

Jordy Rhodes could have had a chance himself soon after, however, he slipped at the wrong time and Ashfield cleared the danger.

After those initial scares Ashfield came back into the game causing Mandurah all sorts of problems from a corner kick before Mandurah went straight down the other end and their pressure forced an Ashfield defender to missplace his clearance against his own crossbar. From the resultant corner Stuart Francis should have made given Mandurah the lead however his free header was directed wide of the upright from very close in. Ashfield created a second chance of their own soon after as Mandurah keeper Mike Green collided with Stuart Francis leaving the Ashfield forward with an open goal, however, he failed to take advantage.

As the half wore on Ashfield began to dominate creating a number of chances including a header which hit the upright and a shot that was cleared off the Mandurah goal line following a dangerous cross from Ashfield's right. After so many good chances to both teams, Ashfield's goal when it did arrive was extremely fortuitous. After a deflection and a miskick, Mandurah's clearance rebounded off the nose of the Ashfield substitute and into the goal. Ashfield held onto their lead and went in 1-0 up at the break.

The second half was a scrappy affair and a real let down from a spectator's perspective. Ashfield came out with the intention of hanging onto what they had and Mandurah could not produce enough inspiration or creativity to break them down. Ashfield capped off their determined performance with a second goal late on to seal a memorable victory and to place themselves back in the running for the Division One title.

Forrestfield United - South West Phoenix 2:4 (0:3)

Goals: 0:1 Gary Mayers (10.); 0:2 Sebastian Trim; 0:3 Gary Mayers; 0:4 Patrick Quinn (58.); 1:4 Phil Bell (Penalty, 65.); 2:4 Laurence Endersby (Own goal)

Phoenix made things hard for themselves in the last stages of Saturdays match after cruising to a 4-0 lead after an hour before hanging on grimly for a 4-2 win. Phoenix made one enforced change to the side, with Steven Rooke coming in for the suspended David Murphy, forcing Andrew Cowley up on to left midfield as Rooke came in at right back. Phoenix had too much pace and fast flowing movement for Forrestfield in the first half and blew them away with some classy goals. Phoenix led within ten minutes as Quinn played a through ball with his knee to Suttie who cut it back from the bye line for Mayers, and he turned from 8 yards and fired a left foot shot into the net for the early lead. Phoenix doubled their lead soon after with a superb strike from 22yards from Sebastian Trim after he collected a short corner from Quinn and buried his shot in off the post. Phoenix almost scored with the move of the match when Rooke cleared a long ball for Suttie. He played a 1-2-1 with Mayers, who cut the ball across the face of goal. Quinn dummied it and Cowley was waiting at the back post, but his shot was too straight and well saved by the keeper. Phoenix didnt have to wait too much longer though to increase their lead, and it was again a fast free flowing move which undid Forrestfield. Cowley played the ball to Suttie on the half way line, who fed Quinn who had run down the line. Quinn cut inside and switched to Hayes, who played a chip pass into Mayers path and he volleyed home from 9yards. Phoenix were in full control at half time with a 3-0 lead.

Phoenix increased their lead just before the hour mark when Quinns cross/shot caught the keeper off his line from 45yards and after the keeper almost kept it out, the ball finally nestled in the corner of the net. It seemed to be a turning point though, as Forrestfield put pressure on Phoenix, and they got back into the match when they were awarded a penalty on 65mins when Rooke was adjudged to have pushed a player in the back from a corner. The Forrestfield got more hope when Endersby, who had came on for Armstrong, scored past his own keeper on 80mins after trying to clear a cross. Cowley then almost scored an own goal when he was at full reach to clear a cross, but Phoenix held on for a win that was tougher than it should have been given they were cruising at 4-0.
